About

The legal production of whisky at Auchentoshan began in 1817 when John Bulloch established the Duntocher distillery on the banks of the Clyde. Despite Bulloch’s bankruptcy, his grandson later co-founded the renowned 19th-century blending and broking firm, Bulloch Lade. In 1834, John Hart and Alexander Filshie acquired the distillery, renaming it Auchentoshan. Ownership changed hands multiple times over the next century.

During the Clyde Blitz of 1941, a bomb hit one of the distillery’s warehouses, causing a stream of burning whisky to flow into the river and leaving a crater that became the distillery pond. In the 1960s, Auchentoshan was purchased by Tennant’s brewers, who sold it in 1969 to publican Eadie Cairns. The distillery underwent upgrades before being sold to Stanley P. Morrison in 1984 and is now part of Beam Suntory. A new visitor facility was added in 2004. Uniquely, all of Auchentoshan’s production is dedicated to single malt whisky.
